Epic of Sally Robertson, page 42

From Grass Dog Studio

Sometimes you can turn a punishment into an enticing treat by changing your tone of voice. In comics, that’s done with expressions, and slightly alterations to the wording. I’m sure that Sally suspects that there may be social consequences to staying in during lunch, but they currently outweigh the social consequences of playing outside with Carl. And, also, science!

I’ve got to find a way to explain this science club stuff more in the comic itself, but it’s going to have to be in passing. It’s important background, but as a reader you won’t need to know it until a little later. However, for those who are curious, it does tie some things together, so I’ll spill it here and maybe you guys can give me some feedback about how I reveal it in pages to come! So, the background is this:

Sally and Marshall have been part of the school’s science club, probably since third grade. My school didn’t have one. I don’t know how many do. But I think science clubs should exist, so here way are! And, the reason Sally already knows Mrs. Berkeley and has a rapport with her is because Mrs. Berkeley is the teacher in charge of the science club. It’s really that simple!

Speaking of plots, I’ve just been struck with the seeds of a sequel to this story. It would take a big jump into the future, and probably start with Sally graduating from college. It isn’t just a sequel for a sequel’s sake, either. I mean, it would be very different from this comic. But it occurred to me that there might be another story to tell. So, I’m going to work on the concept for it, and probably script it out while I’m finishing this one. That will give me some options when we get to the end. I could go back and finish the unfinished Harmless Free Radicals stories, or I could keep pressing forward. Maybe by then I could entice someone to join my creative team and we could up the ante on the art and writing…

I mean, as long as we’re daydreaming here, right?

Anyway, next comic is being posted on Thursday! That’s in TWO DAYS! Woo-hoo!
